Not to be confused with a city of a similar name on Tyneside, Newcastle-under-Lyme is a market town in the county of Staffordshire. Interestingly though, it is proud of its similarity, and is in fact part of an international network of settlements that bare the Newcastle name.
North of Birmingham, south east of Liverpool and south of Manchester, the town is also only 2 miles from Stoke on Trent and has a population numbering in the region of 75,000.
The clue is really in the name, and it’s no surprise to find that Newcastle developed around a 12th century castle. It was given all sorts of privileges in the 13th century, and became a guild town and a borough. The market has been a feature ever since this time, and can still be found today. Other industries that grew in the town include textile manufacturing, coal mining, iron casting, as well as earthenware and smoking pipe production.
There are a lot of landmarks in the town, including the Queen Elizabeth Gardens, Guildhall, New Vic theatre and velodrome. There are loads of sports clubs in the area, and it’s also noted as a cultural centre too.
Newcastle is particularly well placed in Staffordshire, because it’s right next to some seriously good driving terrain. The Peak District isn’t too far away, nor is Snowdonia, but in general that’s some wonderful countryside as well. From bendy B roads to motorways, particularly the M6, it’s simple to get around.
