South Shields
The coastal town of South Shields is situated in the east of the Tyne and Wear county, in the north east of England. Positioned on the mouth of the River Tyne, it’s located to the east of Newcastle and has a population figure of about 83,000.
While there’s history going right back to Roman times, the most notable period for the town was during the Industrial Revolution when it sprang up due to coal mining in the area. Ship building also became a hugely important industry during the 1800s and continued right up to the 20th century, to the extent that South Shields was targeted in both World Wars.
A plethora of notable landmarks can be found around the town, including a Roman fort, the Customs House theatre, Souter Lighthouse, and The Groyne. Despite much modern development, it’s clear that a proud maritime history still exists.
Although it’s positioned at the eastern end of a huge urban area, the good news is that once you get out of South Shields, there’s no lack of open space to the west. Indeed the Northumberland National Park is well within reach, as are the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, but really there are some exceptional roads for drivers even closer. It’s just a matter of escaping the city, turning the sat nav off and following your nose.
