Walsall
A large industrial town, Walsall is situated in the northern half of the West Midlands, slightly north west of Birmingham and east of Wolverhampton. It has a population of 176,000, is included in the major West Midlands conurbation and is twinned with Mulhouse in France.
With a long history, it became a market town in the 13th century and experienced a huge amount of growth during the Industrial Revolution, mainly due to limestone quarrying; later on, it became a centre for gas production. Enjoying much development after the Second World War, shopping centres, new houses and a plethora of cultural attractions were created.
A huge number of different industries have been located in the town over the years, and these days some traditional manufacturing still goes on, particularly related to leather products. To some extent it is also used as a commuter area for individuals working in the centre of Birmingham. Arguably the most famous thing about the town is its football club, Walsall FC, which was founded in 1888.
Even though Walsall is deep inside a major urban area, once you get out of the jungle there’s some beautiful countryside for drivers to explore all around. The Peak District is to the north, but hopping over ‘borders’ into other counties is also a good option to take advantage of the scenery and the roads. With some great motorway connections nearby, including the M6, Walsall is positioned quite nicely.
