Halifax
Halifax is located in West Yorkshire and has a population of 83,000. Slightly south west of Leeds and north east of Manchester, it’s in the heart of the South Pennines and is known as a Minster town. Aachen in Germany has the pleasure of being twinned with it.
Historically Halifax was at the centre of the cotton, wool and textile trade in the 19th century, and a massive number of mills can still be seen today. The town’s Piece Hall is possibly the best example of a trading ground in the country.
Some landmarks in the town include the Halifax Bank, Town Hall, Minster and Wainhouse Tower. A military regiment is also based there, and several sports teams including the Halifax RLFC and football club. The former is one of the oldest rugby league clubs in the country.
The area around Halifax is just fantastic for motoring, and some of the roads are incredibly exciting. Whether you’re up on the moors or negotiating some narrow hillside lanes, there’s never a dull moment. Hugely variable terrain and changeable weather means you always have to adapt, but that’s all part of the fun. While the town itself might not be the best, the roads around it certainly make up for it.
