Mazda Demio
The Mazda Demio is a super mini car that’s funky, stylish and fun. It’s sporty to drive and has a good amount of kit across various trims. Great for families or people who live in busy, built up areas, it’s budget friendly and delivers quite a lot for very little.
Several generations of the Demio have been released since its introduction in 1996, although the name was changed to the Mazda 2 in all markets except Japan in 2002; it’s still the same car however. Every new model featured improved designs, and the latest are very attractive indeed. Available in 3 and 5 door hatchback versions, as well as a 4 door saloon, the front wheel drive setup and small engines make it nice and perky.
Indeed the Demio has gone from looking rather dull and cheap to overtly stylish and shapely. There are loads of sharp shapes and the raked profile creates a sense of high performance akin to hot hatches. You’ll find typical Mazda designs inside, which are quirky, durable and functional. There’s good leg room across hatchback and saloon variants and the seats are comfy and supportive. While the 250 litre boot isn’t the largest around, it’s good enough for shopping and other everyday items.
With a solid driving experience, you get the feeling not much can go wrong with the Demio. Featuring some sharp and responsive steering, cornering is a good laugh, and parking couldn’t be easier. The ride is excellent and you hardly notice large bumps on terrible roads. Performance from the small engines is good overall; you’ll be looking at 1.3 or 1.5 litre petrols and 1.4 or 1.6 litre diesels. Economical but far from lacklustre, they round off an already sweet on road package.
While you’ll almost certainly find more Mazda 2s on the road than Demios due to the mid life name change, Motors.co.uk is the best place to find both. Some unbelievable good deals are on offer due to low costs and superb quality; you can get a huge amount of bang or your buck with used cars for sale. The fact is though, a second hand Mazda Demio will be an excellent purchase.
Clearly then the Mazda is a great all round subcompact car that has a lot to offer in all areas. Stylish, practical and a lot of fun to drive, it’s cheaper than much of the competition but just as good, if not better.
