Mazda MX-3
The Mazda MX-3 is a 3 door, 4 seat hatchback from the 1990s that’s the perfect example of what the Japanese company excels at. It looks quirky, performs exceptionally well and is great value for money- all hallmarks of the brand to some extent. A good car for ‘real drivers’, it’s a solid all rounder and is even great for families. Check out this car if you want something cheap but of great quality.
Produced between 1991 and 1998, the small coupe was hugely popular across the board, and younger drivers in particular responded to the sporty looks and zippy 1.8 litre V6 engines of the top end versions. There was also a smaller 1.6 unit that was comparatively economical and docile. A few upgraded versions were also available, including the RS, SE and GS that featured improved performance and trim.
The design is ‘classic’ Mazda at its best- rather understated but with a hint of liveliness about it. The small rear spoiler is a lovely feature that lets you know what it can do, without giving too much away. Not overly spacious inside, the interior is definitely a mid 90s car, and the array of plastic is a real giveaway. It’s not bad, just rather dull. However, the seats are comfortable, there’s quite a bit of kit, and the boot isn’t a bad size either.
The driving experience is where this car really stands out, particularly in V6 form. It handles very well indeed and the front wheel drive setup means there’s a whole heap of grip on tap. While not fast (it does 0-60mph in around 8 seconds), the 1.8 litre engine is sprightly and gives you a lot to smile about. The smaller 1.6 is much more relaxed and prefers to take it easy rather than rush around. The Mazda performs well on all types of roads, but really outdoes itself on back roads with an abundance of corners.
In all honesty they are loads of cheap used Mazda MX-3 cars out there, so finding a good one shouldn’t be a problem at all, especially if you shop at Motors.co.uk. With over 150,000 different second hand cars for sale at super discounted prices, it’s like bargain central. Paying less and getting more is all part of the experience, and its one you’ll be totally thankful for.
Clearly then, the Mazda MX-3 is a lovely little 2 door coupe/hatchback with a lot of personality and an excellent driving experience, especially the 1.8 litre version. It’s incredible value for money these days and makes a brilliant run around for families or people trying to keep to strict budgets. It really will put a smile on your face.
