MG Midget
True to its name, the MG Midget is a tiny roadster with a lot of character. A real 1960s car, it’s still popular today with enthusiasts, collectors and budget buyers. Classic designs, a great driving experience and punchy performance give it some soul and make it a lot of fun.
During its production run from 1961 to 1979, 226,001 were made, but they model is something of a rarity these days. A wide range of versions were released over the years, and while the originals took inspiration from the Austin Sprite, later ones were definitely more performance based. Weighing less than 750 kilos, the rear wheel drive, 2 door roadster was armed with some pint sized engines, but the overall power to weight ratio meant is was very speedy indeed.
In terms of how it looks, the Midget is wonderful with its friendly shape, smiling front end and overall quirkiness. The inside is rather small, but is styled in a fantastically classic way with lots of leather and metal; it really is how you’d picture an up market car from this era. While the boot isn’t particularly large, the main reason to buy this auto is to put the soft top roof down on a hot summer’s day and have the time of your life.
While the engines are small- the top of the line being a 1.5 litre petrol- you still get a good level of performance overall. A whole heap of grip, a solid ride and a spirited noise from the engine lets you know that you’re in a wonderfully engineered motor from the golden age of driving. What the Midget might lack in speed, it more than makes up for in terms of enjoyment.
Quite a rare car to see around, most have been snapped up by private buyers who restore them to former glory. If you’re looking to do the same thing, or just want a cheap run around with a convertible roof, shopping at Motors.co.uk is the best way forward. There are thousands of second hand cars for sale listed at significantly reduced prices, and the high quality means a used MG Midget will be superb.
Clearly then, the Midget is a wonderful little car that deserves respect. It’s small, punchy and has all the characteristics you’d expect from a classic MG. While not the fastest car out there, the huge grip and responsive steering cancel that dilemma out. A lot of fun, you’d be mad to pass up the opportunity to get one.
