MG ZT
Modern MG cars are known for being incredibly high performance and equally as good quality. The ZT is a perfect example of this, and takes the Rover 75 on which it’s based to astronomical new heights. Sporty, stylish and superb to drive, it’s an awesome executive car that’s pure fun through and through.
Around 27,000 were made during its production life from 2001 to 2005, and that makes is comparatively exclusive. The ZT is available as a saloon or estate, and so brilliant serves all types of motorists. Several versions were released, including the blisteringly fast ZT-T, and hugely muscular 260 with a beastly V8 engine. If anything, the MG is a real driver’s car that also exhibits good levels of practicality and versatility.
This is a good looking car and has a certain arrogance about it, and quite rightly so. Despite the Rover shape, the front end has been redesigned to look mean and uncompromising, and the more powerful versions even have an air intake mounted on the bonnet- impressive stuff. The interior has a strong feel to it, and is certainly very high quality. Some lovely chrome finishing and classy looking plastics make it a very up market place to be. No shortage of equipment, comfortable seats and a lot of space are important elements that add the finishing touches to an excellent package.
Most models of the ZT are front wheel drive, and so handle incredibly well. The V8 260 however is rear wheel drive, but actually out performs the others. Precise steering and heroic levels of grip means the MG goes round corners brilliantly, but is also happy cruising around on straight roads. A great range of petrol engines mean you can go for something more relaxed or full bore; from a smaller 1.8 litre to a mid range 2.5 litre V6 and of course the 4.6 litre V8, the ZT doesn’t hold back. A 2.0 diesel is also available for sensible people.
There’s no question that this is a fantastic car, and as such, prices of the better ones are quite high. The simple fact is that if you want a sporty executive car that’s completely different to the current crop of German, French or Italian offerings, the MG ZT is definitely worth a look. It’s muscular, fast and very well equipped. A superb driving experience overall and massive speed from the big V8 engined models give it every reason to drive around with a highfaluting attitude. It’ll turn some heads in the car park and put a smile on your face when out on the road.
