The Mitsubishi Challenger is an absolute monster of an off road 4x4. Not only does it look imposing and daunting, it’s also supreme on rough terrain and simply cavernous inside. Rugged, durable and very reliable, it’s the perfect choice for the likes of farmers or other jobs where heavy use is key; families will also love it due to the insane levels of practicality on offer. A bit of a veteran these days, there’s still a lot to like, and it can beat some new pretenders into submission.
Known by several names around the world, including the Shogun Sport, the Challenger was unveiled in 1996 and was a stalwart in the 4 wheel drive sector until production ceased in 2008. Numerous facelifts and updates were applied to it over the years, and actually later versions were a tad more refined than the originals. The 4 door SUV was armed with some huge engines including a 3.5 litre V6 petrol and 3.2 litre turbo diesel. Plenty of power and some hardcore engineering ensured it was more than a match for Mother Nature.
By all accounts the Mitsubishi is a big brute that has some very hardy designs going on. The original versions were just the definition of muscular, however later ones were actually more stylish, and commanding. Big wheels, body sills, no nonsense shapes and a forceful front grille give off a ‘get out of the way’ attitude. The interior is massive in proportions and can fit 5 people with no trouble. Not particularly sophisticated, it’s also not built for comfort. The high driving position and simple cockpit layout make it easy to use and overall the kit level is quite good. It’s just a ‘get in and drive up a mountain’ kind of car. Luxury is for wimps.
Driving the Challenger takes a bit of getting used to because it’s a very big boy. The bulky shape doesn’t help matters in town, and out on the open road it can be a handful as the steering isn’t very sensitive. The off road capability is sublime however, so if you spend most of your time slowly climbing up dirt tracks or going over fields, there’s nothing to worry about. Despite the large engines, you won’t get much speed out of this car as it weighs more than Jupiter, but then again you don’t need it when the going gets tough in the wilds.
If you’re serious about getting the Mitsubishi, Motors.co.uk is without doubt one of the best places to look. Over 150,000 different used cars for sale are available, and not only are they all of very high quality, but large price reductions means they’re cheap too. You’ll pay next to nothing for a second hand Mitsubishi Challenger, and that’s music to the ears of 4x4 buyers.
The clear fact is that the Challenger is a real contender in the off road arena. The huge size, excellent engineering and very durable build quality means it can stand up to almost anything. Solid on road but not great, it’s a good choice for ‘outdoorsy’ families and especially for workmen need something resilient and full on. It won’t let you down, and on rough terrain that’s exactly what’s required.
