Mitsubishi GTO
The Mitsubishi GTO is one of the simply incredible group of sports cars that came out of Japan in the 1990s. A high performance machine that offers great designs and a fantastic driving experience, it’s certainly one for people who like to pretend they’re racing drivers. Full of technology, it was well ahead of its time.
It was introduced in 1990 and was known as the 3000GT outside of Japan. An array of models was released in the years that followed, each one being updated in terms of style and performance. Packed full of gadgets and gizmos, some may have called it overkill, but really all the tech combined to produce a brilliant driver’s car. V6 engines were a mainstay, and produced a whole load of power that let the GTO compete with the big boys.
This is a car that combines sexy designs with pure engineering- as a result the aerodynamic shape looks awesome. Low, sleek and very sporty, the front and air deflectors built into the doors are particularly nice. Earlier generations even featured popup headlights. Inside it’s small and quite tight, so taller drivers might find it awkward. Even though there’s a 2+2 seating layout, the rear seats are a token gesture and can’t fit much; the boot isn’t that big either. Expect early 90s plastic all around the cabin, which is minimalist, but good to get into overall.
To drive, the Mitsubishi is excellent, and although it’s more of a sports saloon than an ultra fast coupe, it really makes for a lot of fun. All models provide a lot of grip, especially those with 4 wheel drive systems, and traction is good in the corners. While the ride is firm, it’s not uncomfortable at all- anyway you’re not there to sit in luxury. Top end V6 models produce 320 horsepower and can boast a 0-60mph time of 5.6 seconds. It’s definitely quick then.
Since production ended in 2001, it’s reasonable to expect a solid selection to be available pre owned.
