To look at, there’s no question the Space Wagon is an MPV. While the designs aren’t exactly cutting edge, they are quite bold and provide some character. Modern versions in particular are quite ‘cool’ with a long, sleek body, big alloy wheels and a front end that definitely means business. The interior is well laid out, with the choice of a 2+2+2 seating arrangement with individual chairs, or a 2+2+3 with a rear bench; this makes it versatile for families. Functional in design, you won’t find anything that stands out as remarkable, but overall there’s a sensible and robust feeling. Add a solid equipment level and a decent boot and it’s not bad at all.
The Mitsubishi drives exactly how you’d expect it to. It’s quite forgiving in terms of the ride, and holds itself nicely on the road. However the handling isn’t that great and you don’t get much feel. It’s excellent as a cruiser though, and can more than handle itself in town and on normal roads. The various petrol and diesel engines are punchy and economical, but don’t expect to get up to speed quickly.
While it was reasonably priced during its production run, the Space Wagon can now be bought even cheaper if you go second hand.
