Those people looking for an incredibly affordable family car with a shed load of character, great reliability and frugal fuel economy really couldn’t do better than the Peugeot 406. Despite having been out of production for several years now, it’s still an excellent option to consider because it actually offers a lot for very little. The 406 was produced between 1995 and 2004, and was a hugely popular car in its time. Indeed it won several industry awards and it’s easy to see why. Inside it’s much the same story, but there’s an excellent level of comfort all around and an almighty amount of kit. Saloon and estate versions are the most practical with big boots and larger interior spaces, but the coupe is a bit sportier. Well designed, ergonomic and actually pretty high quality, there’s not much the 406 can’t do.
In terms of the driving experience, the 406 is more than good enough for families these days. It handles well, has a comfortable ride and doesn’t cost a lot to run. While there’s a muscular 3.0 V6 engine for those people looking for a bit more performance, on the whole you’ll find a frugal tone with ‘normal’ versions. Ideal in towns, on country roads and even on motorways, the Peugeot certainly has a few tricks up its sleeve.
The great thing about this car is that it offers phenomenal value for money. There are loads out there and they aren’t that expensive either.
