With the Porsche 944, there’s a lot to get excited about for classic car enthusiast, but also for used car buyers. It’s an out and out sports car from the 1980s that looks awesome, drives incredibly well and doesn’t hang around. While modern day Porsche cars are sublime in every respect, if you want to be a bit different and still stand out from the crowd, this car certainly lets you do both.
Introduced in 1982, the 944 was produced until 1991 when it was replaced with the 968. Over this time it had gained a reputation for being high performance and high quality, and had no trouble making a case for itself in the GT market. Around 160,000 units were made during its 9 year life, and that includes some rather eye widening special editions like the Turbo, Turbo S, 944 S, and S2. The great thing about the Porsche was that it came in both coupe and cabriolet forms, so it’s easy to see why it was so appealing.
A good looking car from all angles, the Porsche has a powerful presence about it. The long body and sleek shape give it some purpose and some lovely features include the strong flared wheel arches and popup headlights. Inside, things are most definitely 80s and getting in is like being transported back in time. However, comfortable seats, a lot of space and a clearly arranged, ergonomic and tactile cockpit make getting behind the wheel quite enjoyable. There’s a decent sized boot too which makes it quite the grand tourer.
The driving experience is good, and you can really get stuck into corners thanks to an excellent balance and high levels of grip. While earlier models aren’t exactly the fastest around, later versions like the Turbo or S2 are more muscular and have mountains of grunt under the bonnet. You’ll be looking at around 225 horsepower and 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds, which isn’t slow by any means. Holding the road well, the ride is firm but fair and you get a lot of enjoyment out of any length of journey.
While numbers are in decline as savvy collectors snap them up, there’s still potential to bag a bargain if you shop at Motors.co.uk. With one of the largest selections of used cars for sale around, prices are well and truly slashed, and there’s also a commitment to quality that means you won’t find anything but the best. Exceptional value for money, sometimes going old school can pay big dividends.
Ultimately the Porsche 944 is a legendary car that still has a lot to offer. No lack of performance, an excellent drive and quirky interior designs make it a great all round package that’ll never fail to make you feel alive. While the new kids on the block might be louder and faster, this crafty veteran can still show them a thing or two.
