Proton Gen-2
The Proton Gen-2 is a compact car from the Malaysian automaker that’s cheap, well rounded and actually very clever. Models with ecoLogic engines run on petrol and LPG, and are therefore incredibly economical as well as environmentally friendly. Not overly exciting to look at or drive, it will service families admirably.
Since its release in 2004, the Gen-2 has undergone several transformations in terms of design, and actually the most modern aren’t too bad at all; there’s just no emotion involved. Available in 5 door hatchback and 4 door saloon versions, the Proton is front wheel drive and features two small petrol engines of 1.3 and 1.6 litres in size, designed by Lotus. Some up market models can also be found, namely the Special Edition, Persona, and ecoLogic with the special engines.
It’s a rather understated car when compared to other hatchbacks out there, but there are some nice design elements nonetheless, such as a front end with ‘tiger like eyes’ and an array of forceful angles. A relatively spacious interior is packed full of kit, and the minimalist design is excellent. Lots of decent materials are used, and comfort isn’t a problem either. A 460 litre boot is enough to fit everyday objects and means the Proton is quite practical.
Despite the involvement from Lotus in the development of this car, the Gen-2 doesn’t share any characteristics that make the British brand a world beater. The handling is rather dull, and there isn’t much feel through the steering wheel. However it’s adequate at low speeds and has quite a soft ride. The 1.6 litre engine is the best, and delivers a surprising punch. From a purely financial standpoint though, the ecoLogic is excellent alternative due to the low running costs.
You won’t see this Malaysian car around on British roads much, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be bought. Check out the range of used cars for sale at Motors.co.uk and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Basically, the Proton is rather generic in the way it looks and how it drives, but that doesn’t mean it should be discounted. Overall it’s a solid option that’ll perform well for families or people on tight budgets. A bit different to the usual European gang, it’s not a bad option by any means.
