Smart cars might look a little quirky to the uninitiated but they represent superb value for money and great economy. Powered by small rear or front mounted engines, they have surprising balance and handling and some models have very respectable speed and acceleration too.
There are several models of Smart Cars. The first, which was manufactured from 1998 to 2000 was the City Coupe. This continued in production after 2001 when it was called the City Cabrio. It had another name change in 2004 when it was called the Fortwo.
In 2002 the Smart Crossblade was introduced. This was essentially a roadster version of the Fourtwo but without a windscreen, roof or doors, so it was not very useful in inclement weather. It is said that Robbie Williams purchased one – that would be a very special used car!
The Smart Roadster was launched in 2003. This is a great little car for the money and performs like one that normally you would have to pay much more for. With its low weight and tiny turbocharged engine, you really do feel you are driving something far more powerful as you accelerate up to 62 mph in a little over 10 seconds.
In 2004 the Fourfour was launched as a supermini. This is the only Smart car that will carry more than two people. Styled as a four door hatchback, it offers a surprising amount of space. The car is very economical and has quite good performance. The Brabus version has a 177 bhp engine with a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 6.9 seconds.
