Smart Fortwo
The Smart Fortwo really is the ultimate city car. It’s tiny, nippy to drive, is incredibly easy to park and is actually a lot of fun. When negotiating the urban jungle, small is best, and that’s exactly the kind of thinking that has made the Smart hugely popular. It may be pint sized, but it packs a punch and what it lacks in performance it more than makes up for in personality.
Introduced in 1998, the Smart was an instant hit. Cheap to buy, cheap to run and incredibly easy to drive, it’s easy to see why people loved it. There have been several face-lifted generations over the years, with the Fortwo being the second from 2007. Named after its seating arrangement, there’s certainly no confusion over what it’s about.
Unquestionably stylish, the Smart is cute and quirky, and has a happy attitude about it. With a smiling front end, some interesting angles and lines on the bodywork, and no lack of eye catching colour schemes, it’s attractive in all respects. The interior is surprisingly large, but just as well designed as the outside. With an array of classy dials, switches and knobs, eccentricity is rife but is an integral part of the show. You’ll also find quite a good level of equipment, across the various trim levels, with the Grandstyle and (unbelievably) Brabus models standing out.
The Fortwo is just awesome when it comes to practicality. Parking isn’t an issue because this mini motor is as long as most cars are wide, so you can simply drive into any space and leave parallel parking to others. As you’d expect the boot isn’t that big, but it can fit several shopping bags, and there’s some degree of cabin storage areas which help out too.
To drive it’s akin to a go kart, in that it goes where you want it to and does so with energy. While not fast by any means, running costs are almost non existent, and you’ll pay hardly anything in tax. The ride is quite firm, so avoiding potholes is a must, but it has a microscopic turning circle that makes things much easier. Motorways aren’t usually a problem, but you might have to check the weather forecast for strong winds as it could blow away.
The fact the Smart has been around for a while and has stuck such a chord with the British public means there’s no shortage to choose from on the second hand market.
