Ssangyong Kyron
If you’re looking for an SUV that’s a fantastic all rounder, the Ssangyong Kyron should be right up your street. Even though most people have never heard of the South Korean automaker, the fact is that this car is a perfect example of why it’s perfectly acceptable to look outside of Europe. Solid, reliable and capable off road, it’s just value for money at its greatest.
Unveiled in 2005, the 4 door compact SUV wouldn’t look out of place among a car park full of big name brands. It comes in 2 or 4 wheel drive options, so is a good option for those people who plan to stay on the tarmac or venture further off road. It uses an engine and gearbox designed by Mercedes, so is therefore pretty robust under the bonnet. Face lifted in 2007, the Kyron continues to be a dark horse but one that’s always worth a look.
The Ssangyong is quite bulky, but features some clean lines and a nice chrome front grille. With some nice angles and quite a muscular appearance, it’s pretty much your stereotypical 4x4, and that’s a good thing; clearly the company used an ‘if it ‘aint broke then don’t fix it’ mentality. The large interior can seat 5 in comfort, and the 625 litre boot can extend to over 1000 litres with the rear seats out; that’s gargantuan in size. 3 different trim levels- S, SE and SX (later EX)- are well equipped, and there’s a clean but functional feeling to the cabin.
The 4 wheel drive models are bone fide off road performers, and the Kyron can hold its own in the wilds with no problem at all thanks to some hardcore engineering and clever suspension. At home on the tarmac as well, it behaves itself and has some predicable steering. Great traction on any surface and in any conditions, it’s incredibly versatile and is perfect for everyday use by families. The engines are strong, and include 2.0 and 2.7 litre diesels, the former being the most popular.
Simply incredible value for money, you really do get a huge amount of bang for your buck with this car. Buying second hand however will enable you to take this further, and come away with the bargain of the century. Motors.co.uk is one of the best places to go for a used Ssangyong Kyron because prices are cut and quality is excellent across thousands of cars for sale.
At the end of the day, this awesome South Korean SUV is just a superb all rounder that can take on established brands at their own game and come out on top. In all areas it performs well and the fact it can be bought incredibly cheaply pre owned makes it one of the best cars of its kind. It’s a jack of all trades, but masters most as well.
