Michio Suzuki formed the company in 1909 and initially its main focus was on weaving machinery. However it soon became apparent that diversification was needed and Suzuki ventured into cars in 1937. After ceasing production during the Second World War, the demand for cheap personal transportation in Japan skyrocketed and Suzuki was able to fill the gap with the Suzulight which proved a great success.
During the 1960s and 70s, the company continued to build on its accomplishments with the release of the Fronte 800, Jimny 4x4, Alto and SC100. The defining feature of them was a small size and ‘can do’ attitude which has been a mainstay of the brand ever since.
Suzuki was truly a global force by the 1980s with a presence in the US, Canada, Australia, Pakistan, UK and India. People couldn’t get enough of the small, affordable nature of its autos. The Cultus and Escudo 4x4 were slightly larger than previous models but were nonetheless successful. The company even cornered the roadster market with the Cappuccino in 1991.
First released in 1993, the Wagon R is arguably Suzuki’s best selling car. Clever engineering and design work meant that the inside space was cavernous for such a small car. It has been a fixture at the top of Japanese sales figures ever since.
The company continued to dominate its niche and by 2003 it had been number 1 in ‘kei car’ (Japanese for micro-car) sales for 30 years. The Swift, Alto and Twin released around the same time illustrated the reason why perfectly.
