    Toyota Starlet

With a name like Starlet, you’d expect big things in terms of design from this mini Toyota. It’s actually quite boring, and does little to create any emotion. However that’s all secondary because it’s a superbly reliable and economical small car that performs well at the lower end of the price spectrum. Budget buyers generally just want something that’ll go, so if you don’t mind driving something that looks fairly anonymous, then keep reading.

A bit of a motoring veteran, the Toyota was released in 1973 and was produced for 26 years until it was replaced with the Yaris in 1999. A whole host of generations were released during this time, including some higher performance versions- the GT Turbo and Glanza. Available in hatchback, coupe, saloon and estate variants, the Starlet was certainly versatile and appealed to a range of individuals as a result.

Whatever generation of the Starlet you come across, the common theme is a lack of design prowess and a cheap, value for money nature. The most modern 90 series is probably the best of the regular lot, with a curvy body and friendly demeanour. The special edition versions like the GT Turbo are in a whole different league, and feature sharp angles, sporty wheels and delicious engine air intakes. Inside the normal ones, things are pretty basic and sparse in terms of equipment, but comfort is high and you don’t need to be a genius to work any controls. While the boot isn’t that great on hatchback models, older estate and saloons are quite accommodating.

Relatively good on the road, there’s nothing to write home about, but then again you don’t sit there in a state of total boredom. It’s not bad in the corners, but don’t expect a lot of feel from the steering wheel. The suspension is quite firm, so it’s not one to relish rough back roads. Around town however it’s excellent because speed isn’t necessary. While the 1.3 litre engine is sprightly, it’s not exactly a drag racer. In contrast, the Glanza is a real pocket rocket and can reach 60mph in 8.3 seconds.

Incredibly good value for money, the Starlet is a brilliant buy for cash strapped individuals. The huge number produced over its 26 year life means you don’t have to be a relic hunter to uncover a treasure; simply check out the range of used cars for sale here at Motors.co.uk. Discounted prices and high quality across the board means any second hand Toyota Starlet will be a real bargain.

Look, it’s not particularly pretty, well equipped or fast, but it does drive nicely and is phenomenally reliable as you’d expect of a Toyota branded car. Cheap to buy and cheap to run, if you’re in need of something solidly built for pennies, it’s a really good option to think about. On the other hand, if you’re after something performance hungry that’s a real hot hatch, go for the GT Turbo or Glanza. There’s something for everyone, and it meets everyone’s needs perfectly.
