While the original was released in 1978 under the name ‘Celica Supra’, the Supra name proper wasn’t used until 1986. Power to weight ratios have always been a focal point of the Toyota, and while the engines might not be the biggest, the lightweight chassis means something akin to a racing car is the result. When production was ended in 2002, a true legend was lost.
In terms of design then, the latest versions of the Supra are breathtaking to behold. The low profile, futuristic look is teamed with unbelievably attractive curves, an engine intake mounted on the bonnet and a huge real spoiler. It’s everything you’d expect from a Japanese sports car and more. You’ll find the interior to be well designed, comfortable and quite well equipped, but it’s rather snug and isn’t practical. After all, it’s a driver’s car not an everyday run about.
The Supra really excels once you get out on the road, and to be honest the only thing that’ll make you stop is running out of petrol. It’s just better than incredible. Agile and supremely confident in the corners thanks to a perfect setup, you can feel everything through the sensitive steering. There’s more grip than you can shake a stick at, and at speed the car just sticks to the road. Neck breaking acceleration and a (limited) top speed of 155 mph make you feel like a driving god.
With a limited availability in the UK, you might think that getting your hands on this incredible machine is too difficult. Ultimately, the Toyota Supra is a remarkable car that’s just immense in every regard. They don’t make cars like it any more, and it’s such a shame. Mind blowing performance, striking designs and an almost biblical driving experience puts it on par with the legendary Honda NSX and Integra Type R. Amazing.
