Toyota Surf
The Toyota Surf is a big SUV that’s strongly related to the Hilux pickup truck. Impressively imposing, reliable and with good off road ability, the low cost nature of older models means cash strapped buyers can pick up a great deal. While it’s not at all refined or luxurious, it’ll go almost anywhere and not complain.
Also known as the Hilux Surf and 4 Runner, the original versions were just short wheel base models of the pickup with a different body shell. Not only was this incredibly lazy on behalf of the Japanese company, it was also an inspired move because the Surf had all the characteristics of its almost indestructible sibling. Produced between 1984 and 2009, an array of generations can be found, with later ones being rather well stocked.
Always a big-un, the third and fourth generation models are particularly good to look at with chunky shapes, an aggressive persona and a front grille that snarls. It stands out on the road due to its sheer size, but isn’t ugly by any means. With a plethora of trim levels on offer, the Surf is well equipped, comfortable and spacious inside. Very easy to operate thanks to a functional cockpit, little could go wrong, and that’s exactly what its audience are looking for. Practical thanks to a big boot, it’s a good all rounder for sure.
Getting used to the large dimensions might take a bit of getting used to, so proceed with caution the first time you head out on the road. The Toyota is actually quite easy to drive and is rather agile and light on its feet. Despite some big engines, including a 4.0 litre V6 and 4.7 litre V8, it’s not exceptionally fast, but doesn’t hang about either. Off road it’s superb thanks to the Hilux DNA, a whole host of clever engineering gadgets and a fantastic build quality all around. Bad weather and poor terrain make this car come alive.
