Vauxhall Frontera
The Vauxhall Frontera is a muscular SUV from yesteryear that doesn’t hold back in terms of design or performance. It’s certainly not a wall flower and is more than noticeable on the road, even with the abundance of modern day monsters. If you’re after something ‘brutish’, affordable and quite powerful, the Frontera is a noteworthy option, not least because of its great value.
One of the old guard, the original Frontera was released in 1989 and its production spanned 15 years until it was halted in 2004. Over that time though, the Vauxhall had made a reputation for itself as a no nonsense 4x4 that was always ready to roll. The second generation model released in 1998 was considerably better looking, much sportier and a tad more refined, although arguably less rugged. Throughout its life, the Frontera was available in 3 or 5 door formats, with the latter being very spacious indeed.
The most modern versions are indeed more civilised, but you wouldn’t want to argue with one in a car park. Undoubtedly muscular, the sheer size, meaty front end and classic tailgate with a spare wheel mounted on it gives it a ‘don’t mess with me’ kind of character. Despite the stereotypical suburban exterior, the inside is rather meagre and cheap looking. Some chunky controls and a very tangible cockpit are just what you’d expect, but there’s not much equipment to play with compared to other autos. A high driving position, a large boot and more than enough space for passengers mean it’s not all bad though.
Take the Frontera on the road and it’s like driving a tank. Huge is an understatement, but some relatively responsive steering and strong suspension make it quite easy to drive on the whole. The ride isn’t the best on the road, but off road it’s more than adequate, but in all honesty the 4x4 system is relatively poor. With 8 different engines to choose from though, there’s a lot of power on tap, even if economy suffers as a result.
If you’re looking for the best deals on cars for sale, Motors.co.uk is the place to go. With over 150,000 different second hand autos listed, there’s no shortage of selection, plus you’ll also get some huge price discounts. Considering that quality is an element that’s enforced to a high standard, you can be sure that any used Vauxhall Frontera you come across will be excellent.
So the best reasons to buy this car are because it’s cheap, solid and spacious. While it’s not the most exciting to drive, definitely not the most economical or even that comfortable when out on the road, it’s a big old hulk that’ll keep going no matter what and won’t give up just because it rains. Britain’s roads call for something hardy, and this beast is exactly that!
