If you’re looking for a large executive car with plenty of room, bags of style and a whole heap of comfort, the Vauxhall Signum could be for you. It’s a huge hatchback that does exactly what it says on the tin and doesn’t mess about. Ideal as a workday auto that won’t look out of place in the car park, the Signum is also a great choice for families who need a lot of space. It’s a very solid all rounder that won’t let you down in a hurry.
The Signum was on sale between 2003 and 2008, and while it offered a lot as an overall package, it wasn’t actually that popular with the UK public. What this means is that it’s quite rare and you won’t see one on every street like some other brands out there. The Vauxhall really is a excellent car and a lot in its own right, so it’s quite a shame that it never caught on as well as the Vectra.
In terms of design, it’s quite attractive to look at with some nice curves, chunky shapes and its long profile. While the Signum had a facelift or two, older models are arguably the most attractive with a front end that looks like it’s snarling. There’s nothing wrong with the interior either which is solid, durable and well organised. With a huge amount of interior space, great visibility from some large windows and some seriously comfortable seats, it really is top drawer. That long boot is cavernous in proportion too, so it’s not short on practicality by any means.
An executive car should be good and predictable to drive, after all you don’t want any nasty surprises if you happen to be giving the CEO a lift to a meeting. The Signum doesn’t disappoint in this regard and is a pleasure to get behind the wheel of. It’s at its best on the motorway and is a real long distance cruiser, but is just as comfortable on the back roads. The diesel engines in particular are just excellent and provide a whole heap of power with decent economy.
Due to the fact that it’s been out of production for a few years, and also because it wasn’t really that popular, finding a cheap used Vauxhall Signum is incredibly easy. Ultimately then, the Vauxhall Signum is a fantastic car that should have been a big seller but wasn’t. As far as executive cars go, it might not be super stylish like BMWs or Audis, but it looks good in its own right and does the job exceptionally well.
