The Vauxhall was made between 2000 and 2005, and was actually based on a similar chassis to the Elise, which explains the comparable characteristics. However different designs and engines mean the VX220 has a lot of individual plus points to offer, and it really does excel as a driver’s car. With low weight, a mid engine setup and an excellent balance, it’s not difficult to see why it was so popular. There’s even a cabriolet version with a removable hard top roof.
On the style side of thing, the Vauxhall looks fantastic. Loads of sharp angles, big alloy wheels and the side rear air intakes in particular make it stand out, but the bold colour schemes also help. It looks every bit the speedy sports car from the outside, and the inside is just as attractive. It’s cosy and laid out nicely with some ergonomic buttons that come to hand easily. Not particularly well equipped or practical, the main thing is to have somewhere to sit in order to enjoy the driving experience.
Performance and handling are by far the best things about this car. The steering is so responsive it’s like the car knows instinctively where you want to go, and the amount of grip in the corners is just awesome. While it’s great at normal speeds, thrashing the life out of it on a track is like entering a whole other world. The VX220 has a series of small but powerful engines, with the 2.2 litre being a standout option. Later models had a 2.0 litre turbo which was even better, with its mind numbingly high speeds.
While the Vauxhall was quite popular, there are comparatively few around as not many people wanted to give up such driving perfection.
