Volkswagen Corrado
The Volkswagen Corrado is a sports coupe from the late 1980s that’s every bit the muscular performer. It features some uncompromising designs, beefy engines and quite astonishing handling. With a 2+2 seating layout it’s quite practical too, but most of all it’s just plain fun.
It appeared in 1988 and production ran until 1995. Even though it does share some designs and components with the Golf, it’s completely different in attitude. Pumped up, aggressive and rather cocky, it knows it’s good and likes to remind people of that fact. With front wheel drive and a plethora of powerful engines, including 2.8 and 2.9 litre VR6 petrols, the Corrado is a very capable muscle car in all regards.
There’s no doubt that the VW looks good. A low profile, pert rear end, and sporty looking front are all tasty elements that combine to create a bit of a masterpiece. While some cars from the 80s/90s turn haven’t aged that well, the Corrado is still as youthful as ever. There’s a lot of plastic inside, but it’s not cheap looking at all. Comfortable seats, some nice trims, especially the G60 and VR6, and a durable feel overall makes it feel very up market. There’s not much space in the back or boot however.
A real driver’s car, the Volkswagen is loud, boisterous and can sometimes be a handful when pushed hard. Despite this it’s composed, agile and responsive most of the time, and a real pleasure to get behind the wheel of. The FWD setup means it handles brilliantly in the corners, and the ride is sporty but not overly harsh. With the bigger engines, it’ll really motor, and can get up to speed effortlessly. This is a car that puts the fun back into driving, and can’t be missed.
Less than 100,000 were produced, so getting hold of one could prove tricky as they are renowned for being snapped up by enthusiasts and collector who, understandably, don’t want to let them go. At Motors.co.uk though, you’ll find a wonderful selection of used cars for sale at very low prices, so the odds of finding a quality second hand Volkswagen Corrado are definitely in your favour.
So really, the VW Corrado still has a lot to offer, even years after production ended. The no-nonsense designs, superb performance and amazing driving experience all combine to produce a phenomenal package that’s arguably one of the best ever cars from the German auto giant. If you’re looking for something fun but somewhat practical, this is a great option to go for.
