Volvo S70
The Volvo S70 is a mid size luxury/executive car that features all the hallmarks of the famous Swedish automotive brand. It’s stylish, spacious and excellent to drive, but also has awesome durability and whole heap of inner strength. Offering something a bit different to the regular players in this class, the S70 continues to be a popular choice even today.
First introduced in 1996, the S70 was available in several different trims, and a plethora of upgrades were released until Volvo pulled the plug in 2000. Quite a sporty car, some lively engines were available with turbochargers a regular fixture. The 4 door saloon sported an impressive equipment list, and the top level spec GLT and GLT SE versions were excellent to say the least. Performance hungry drivers could even get the S70-R, which was just a big boy all around.
With an updated shape, the Volvo did have some design features from days gone by, such as the upright front grille, but overall it was quite elegant and handsome. Inside it was roomy and comfortable, with a hardy looking dash that was very well designed and easy to use. Despite its executive demeanour, this car is still family friendly and long journeys with kids in the back wouldn’t be a problem at all. A decent sized boot is just another box to tick off.
Out on the road the S70 is predictable and nicely balanced. The whole driving experience is one full of confidence, and you can really sit back and relax as it makes for a superb motorway cruiser. Excellent grip and sharp handling mean it’s more than happy to take on back roads, and urban areas don’t pose a problem either. A vast array of safety features can put your mind at ease too. ‘Regular’ trims have some nicely powered petrol and diesel engines that pack a punch but don’t pulverise your finances, while the higher performance T5 and R versions are just beastly.
The good news is that you won’t have to spend ages looking around for a cheap used Volvo S70 because Motors.co.uk has huge selection to choose from. Not only is quality supremely high across the whole range of second hand cars for sale, big price discounts are the norm so you can expect to pay peanuts. This car was superb back in the day, and now it delivers simply amazing value for money.
Clearly then, if you want a solid executive car that looks good in the company car park and is also amazing as a family transporter, the Volvo S70 is definitely the one to go for. There’s not much it can’t do, and certainly provides a great alternative to the Germans, French and Americans. Do yourself a favour, but Swedish and you won’t look back.
