The Volvo V50 is a smaller version of the V70 but doesn’t lack any of the clout. It’s more manageable and slightly cheaper, but be fooled into thinking it’s a step down. What you get with the V50 is a super high quality estate car that’s immensely practical, great to drive and fantastically reliable.
While it has been around in one form or another since 1995, the Volvo V50 only took its badge in 2004. Previous versions were of the same ilk but were branded differently. All incarnations of the V50 look great, but some of the body kit packs available on new ones are just awesome. The interior is uncluttered and ‘minimalist’ in nature but still very stylish and brilliantly finished with some impressive kit; it’s clear that much attention to detail has been paid. The seats are comfortable and there’s a cavernous amount of space that 5 adults can fit into with no trouble. Luggage, shopping and all manner of other items can be packed into the massive boot too.
As a Volvo, you’d expect the V50 to be solid and well made, and it is. Safety is one of the brand’s hallmarks and there’s no question that this car carries it on. With a good choice of petrol and diesel engines that range from 1.6 to 2.5 litres, there’s more than enough power to play with while still being relatively economical. The manual and automatic gearboxes are great too, particularly the latter.
What you get from this car is something that’s easy to handle, great to look at, hugely practical and very solidly built. It’s a true Volvo through and through and really does stand on its own merits.
