Burton upon Trent

Burton upon Trent is a town in Staffordshire, in the Midlands. As the name suggests, it’s built over the River Trent, and became famous for brewing for that reason. The population is in the region of 65,000, and remarkably the town is twinned with a range of different places around the world, including Blantyre in Malawi and Toyserkan in Iran.

Indeed the most notable thing about Burton is the brewing tradition; there are 5 major houses these days, but many more existed in its heyday. Due to the high quality of water that contains natural salts and elements, there’s something unique about a beer from this area. Marmite, an offshoot of production, is also made in the town.

Aside from this, Burton on Trent also has its own football team, Burton Albion. There are also cricket, rugby and canoeing clubs which highlight the town’s commitment to sport. The football stadium is a major local landmark, but there are also numerous churches and the Claymills Pumping Station that stand out.

Quite the business centre these days, many large companies have some presence there including Pirelli. There’s also a military presence in the form several army and navy training squadrons and a company of the TA Mercian Brigade.

The fact that Burton is surrounded by country means it’s a great place for drivers to visit. The National Forest is just on the doorstep, and you’ll find some pristine villages and excellent B roads to motor along. Open country is a delight, so take in as much as you can!
