Suzuki Swift Sport

The Suzuki Swift Sport arrived in Britain in 2006, after the standard Swift had already established itself as ultra-reliable and economical.

The Sport version comes with a higher performance engine - a 1.6L petrol unit, which revs freely and produces 123bhp. It's got a four-cylinder twin-cam unit with race-bred refinements like high-lift cams and forged pistons. All this adds up to a much sportier proposition than the standard car. The 0-60mph benchmark sprint takes just under nine seconds.

In fact, the Swift Sport is almost three inches longer than the standard car and has a different image altogether. You'll notice the more aggressive body styling immediately, including special bumpers and spoilers.

There's a stiffer suspension too, which gives more precise handling. The twin-exhaust system allows the engine to breathe more readily and the disc brakes all-round give great stopping power. Inside you'll find red sports seats while the options include four-wheel drive, 17 or 16-inch alloy wheels and an electronic stability control system.

Journalists praised the little hot hatch for its looks, handling, performance and sheer enjoyment for drivers.
