Land Rover Discovery 3

In the world of 4x4s, the Land Rover Discovery 3 is one of the best. It’s big and beastly, but surprisingly comfortable and refined. There’s no question that it can dominate any type of terrain it encounters, but it’s just as poised on the road. Stylish, practical and uncompromisingly solid, it’s the perfect choice for the adventurous.

The first Discovery was introduced in 1989, and it has been at the pinnacle of 4 wheel drive motoring ever since. Generally seen as the ‘younger brother’ to the Range Rover, take nothing away from the Disco as it stands up on its own merits. There have been several generations over the years, each one bigger and more eye-catching than the previous, with the Discovery 3 unsurprisingly being the 3rd.

It certainly looks every bit the beast, and can be transformed into a docile ‘Chelsea tractor’ or hardcore Dakar rally-esq monster depending on your tastes and which extras you go for. The interior is solid and well made, although a lot of plastic is used. Clever seating arrangements mean there’s a titanic amount of room inside, and longer journeys don’t pose a problem.

With 7 seats available, the Discovery 3 is practical for families, and the boot is akin to a whale- it literally swallows anything you offer up to it. With an off road ability that’s second to none, anything from dirt tracks to fields and snowed out roads don’t pose a problem. But then again it handles extremely well on the tarmac and feels responsive and confident through the steering wheel. For such a heavy car, it’s magic in the turns, and there numerous suspension and ride height settings to play with. The Disco is not slow, but it won’t trouble pure ‘on road’ SUVs for speed.

While the Discovery is cheaper than the Range Rover, it’s still quite pricey to buy straight off the shelf. However looking for a pre owned one here at Motors.co.uk is the best way to lessen the financial blow and ultimately come away with a real bargain. Second hand cars for sale are considerably less expensive than buying brand new, and with a used Land Rover Discovery 3 you’ll get all the bang for much less of the buck.

So with the Discovery you get an absolute monster of an off roader that oozes style, solidity and ruggedness at the same time. Perfect for driving over mountains, it’ll laugh at anything British roads can throw at it. But with high levels of comfort, practicality and versatility, it’s ideal for everyday driving too. Just make sure it’ll fit in your garage!
