Runcorn is an important industrial and port town located on the banks of the River Mersey in Cheshire. The population stands at 62,000 and it is situated north east of Chester, west of Warrington and south east of Liverpool.
A quaint fishing village until the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution changed its fortune substantially, and soon a large port grew up. Famous for manufacturing soap, a myriad of different industries were located in the town, including ship building, engineering and most notably tanning. Indeed the latter as well as chemical production continued into the 20th century. These days the town is a centre for warehousing and distribution.
Notable places in the town include Halton Castle, Norton Water tower, and Norton Priory. There are also several old churches and various war memorials. The Waterloo Hotel is famous for appearing in a television comedy series as well.
To the east of Runcorn lies the Peak District, and adventurous motorists can even venture south west to the Snowdonia national park in Wales. However, the general area around the town is relatively open, and Cheshire itself is renowned for having some glorious countryside. Driving should never be a chore, and with a plethora of quality roads to explore, it’s nothing but pure fun.
