Situated in the south east corner of Staffordshire, Tamworth is a market town that has around 76,000 inhabitants and is twinned with Bad Laasphe in Germany, as well as Vaujours in France.
With a long history that goes right back to the Saxon era, it has been a stronghold since Norman times thanks to the construction of an imposing castle. The Middle Ages were relatively prosperous, although the town grew dramatically during the Industrial Revolution due to its proximity to nearby coal mines, and as a canal hub.
Following the Second World War, Tamworth continued to develop as it became a dormitory town for individuals working in Birmingham and the general West Midlands urban area. It does have a relatively large business base however, with the likes of logistics and engineering, in addition to light manufacturing. A major claim to fame was the location of the Reliant car company in the town from 1935 to 1998.
In terms of its location for drivers, the best thing about Tamworth is that it is far enough away from the huge conurbation to stand alone and not be overly congested. There’s a good amount of open country around it, and the Peak District can be found to the north. Of course there are good connections to the M1 and M6 motorways, but a plethora of quiet B roads can also be found with relative ease.
Motors.co.uk is by far one of the biggest and best websites in the UK for second hand cars.
