Used BMW X3
The BMW X3 is a crossover SUV and is based on the BMW 3 Series. It was launched originally in 2004 and the latest version, the second generation, was introduced in 2011. The 4 wheel drive system that is used, which is called the X-drive, was specially designed for this car and corrects any instability totally transparently, making the car work exceedingly well both on and off-road.
This is a very practical car with plenty of space for passengers and luggage alike. It is very comfortable although the stiff suspension, whilst improving stability and on and off-road handling, does mean that passengers will notice potholes and rough road surfaces but that is a minor discomfort compared with its many benefits.
In terms of engine line up, there is plenty of choice though early used models are restricted to a 190 bhp six cylinder 2.5 litre petrol engine and two diesel units. Later models include a 215 bhp petrol, and a 3 litre petrol with power outputs up to 280 bhp. The most economical diesel is a 2 litre unit which delivers 150 bhp and returns 44 mpg. There is also a very powerful twin turbo engine model plus some other options.
The X3 is a great car to drive and is very agile - you could think you are driving the saloon. However, as soon as traction levels fall, the xDrive four-wheel drive detects the slightest slippage and increases the power output to the other wheels. This positive approach means the situation is hardly detectable by the occupants.
The latest BMW X3 with launched in 2011 is restricted to a single engine choice, the 184bhp 2.0 litre diesel engine. This is due to the declining popularity of petrol powered models. However this engine is an excellent choice and will power the car from 0 to 62 mph in just 8.5 seconds whilst returning excellent economy.
