Daewoo is one of the pinnacle automotive companies in South Korea and is the embodiment of the cheap and cheerful approach that has come to be associated with the country. Just like many other major motoring manufacturers, the company has had a diverse and varied history, but still offers a solution that proves hugely popular.
Originally part of the massive Daewoo Group conglomerate, Daewoo Motors proper was established in 1983. With a different approach to sales and a fresh new Asian mentality, the brand quickly gained popularity. In a joint venture with General Motors, the Le Mans was one of the first to be produced, followed by the Espero and Tico mini car among others.
The 1990s were a good decade to the company, with cars such as the Lanos, Nubira Leganza taking centre stage. Perhaps Daewoo’s best known auto from this period however was the Matiz which turned out to be a top seller.
Around the turn of the Millennium, General Motors acquired the company after it ran into financial trouble, the result being known as GM Daewoo. The merger did not change the company’s philosophy though, and the Lacetti (of Top Gear fame) was one of the first reasonably priced cars to be produced. Further notable cars of the modern era include the Tosca, Windstorm, Gentra X, Statesman and Spark.
If anything is clear it’s that under all its guises, the South Korean company has been dedicated to providing its customers with the ultimate balance of price and quality since the outset. There’s nothing quite like a Daewoo and that’s why people like it as they know what to expect.
