Ford Maverick
The Ford Maverick is a small SUV that’s great value for money, but one that never really caught on in the UK. It’s pretty rare as a result, which makes it more attractive than some other generic models. With a rugged persona, good build quality and surprising off road ability, there’s really nothing wrong with it and it’s more than a match for most budget 4x4s out there. You’ll be a bit of a maverick to buy one, but actually it’s a great overall package that’s certainly value for money.
Available in Europe between 2001 and 2006, it’s one of the rarest Fords you’ll see on the roads, but that doesn’t matter in the slightest. Despite its limited run in the UK, the Maverick is hugely popular around the world, especially in the US, and modern versions are very beastly indeed. Only 2 models were released in Britain- the 2.0 litre Zetec and the 3.0 litre V6 Duratec, and similarities to its sister car, the Mazda Tribute, are obvious to see.
Regardless of its name which suggests something radically different from the norm, the Maverick is actually rather generic in terms of appearance. It looks like a stereotypical SUV and even updated versions are still rather bland. The bulbous front end is eye catching though, with a black plastic bumper which resembles some rugged stubble you’d commonly see on an adventurer. Inside things are a similar story to be honest- there’s a lot on offer, but it’s not particularly well styled. It’s comfy and roomy however, and the list of kit is extensive too. The large boot won’t be troubled by anything but oversized objects, which is good news.
While style and design might not be its strong suit, once you start up the engine and begin to drive, you’ll soon see that cruising around is. It’s lively for sure, but is also nicely composed and holds onto the road well, especially through the corners, thanks to some confident steering. The 4x4 system means it can head into the rough stuff and not throw a wobbly, and actually it’s more than happy to drive over all but the worst of surfaces.
You may think that finding a used Ford Maverick might be quite a challenge due to its relative exclusivity, however it’s not the case if you browse through the gigantic selection of second hand cars for sale here at Motors.co.uk. Not only will you see high quality across the board, but prices are significantly reduced too. Basically you’ll pay even less for a car that’s an uplifting bargain in the first place.
So while the Ford Maverick might not look particularly inspirational from both the outside and the inside, it still gives you a great driving experience, a whole heap of equipment and a high level of cabin space and comfort. It may have been ignored back in its prime, but the simple fact is this car offers an incredible amount of bang for your buck, and for that reason alone it’s time to give it a second chance.
