The Mini Cooper is a sportier version of the standard BMW produced Mini and is available with normally aspirated engines and supercharged versions, which are called the Mini Cooper S. The range dates from 2002.
Make no mistake; the Mini Coopers can be very sporty cars. They may look like a city car, but once you put them through their paces, they are very fast with rapid acceleration and have superb handling. The first version that was made, from 2002 to 2006, used the original Chrysler engine which, in its basic Mini format, was somewhat underpowered. Even the Cooper, though much improved, lacked some pace, but once the supercharger was added, the car was transformed into a really sporty version.
In 2006 an updated version was launched. It is somewhat larger and there is more space for both passengers and luggage, though there is not a great deal of difference in appearance. The major change is an entirely new engine range, with the supercharger being replaced by a turbocharger. The effect is that now you can reach 62 mph from rest in just 7.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 140 mph. The standard gearbox is a five speed manual.
There is also a 2.0 litre diesel engine (available in models from 2011) that delivers 143bhp. This accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 134 mph. Where it gains however, is in fuel economy and an even torque distribution right through the rev range.
