Engines and transmissions

With three engines to choose from, the M comes standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission, most enjoyable to drive in Sport mode.

Petrol

• The M37 variant featured a 316bhp, 3.7-litre V6 engine with a 0-62 mph time of 6 seconds.
• Hybrid variant (M35h) has a combined 359bhp 3.7-litre V6 engine and electric motor to achieve the fastest 0-62 mph time of 5.5 seconds.
• M37 receives a rating of 27.7 mpg and emits 235g/km of CO2.
• M35h earns the best rating at 40.4 mpg and emits just 162g/km.

Diesel

• 235bhp 3.0-litre V6 (M30d) hits 62 mph in 6.9 seconds.
• M30d turns a rating of 37.7 mpg and emits 199g/km.

Practicality

The Infiniti M is five metres long, so it's comparable to other luxury cars in the segment. While this is a large, roomy car, the handling isn't as precise, so it's not a top choice for tight spaces and congested streets.

Interior space

• Four adults fit comfortably between the front seats and rear outboard seats.
• Rear-centre seat is cramped and better suited for children.

Boot space

Generations

The Infiniti M was first released in the US in 1989, originally offered as both a coupé and convertible. Those models remained in production until 1992, when the nameplate was discontinued for 10 years. Even though the M returned in other parts of the world, it didn't come to the UK until the fourth generation, in 2010. Just a few years later, in 2014, the M was renamed the Q70 to match the other changes made to the Infiniti models.
