Chinese car manufacturer Qoros has unveiled its latest model, a compact crossover named the 3 City SUV, at the Guangzhou motor show in southern China.

You’d be forgiven if you’d never heard of Qoros, but the start-up Chinese manufacturer could soon become a household name in the UK, as it is the first of the People’s Republic’s domestic brands with ambitions for global sales.

Going on sale in China next month, the City SUV is based on the company’s standard 3 hatchback, though it gets larger wheels, greater ground clearance and additional exterior plastic trim for a more rugged, off-road aesthetic.

Aimed at taking on popular crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti, the City SUV comes with a generous standard specification, including a touchscreen infotainment system and Bluetooth connectivity on all models.

In total buyers will be able to choose from four trim levels, with range-topping examples getting toys such as cruise control, electrically adjustable leather seats and 3G internet connectivity.

The City SUV also competes in terms of practicality, with a reasonable 403-litre boot and generous passenger space, according to the brand.

Currently, the only engine available is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol unit developing 156bhp. Its mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and will return an average of 41mpg. A six speed twin-clutch automatic will also be offered.

Qoros claims its models will arrive in European showrooms by 2016, though right hand drive versions will take slightly longer due to the required re-engineering. The 3 City SUV has a starting price of around £15,000 in its domestic market, though UK pricing is still a long way from being confirmed.
