A range-topping version of the Seat Leon could develop as much as 300bhp, Autocar magazine has revealed.
The performance flagship, likely to be called the Leon Cupra R would use a tuned version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged motor found in the newly launched Volkswagen Golf GTI, mated to the VW Group’s seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
As befits a high-powered hot hatchback, the Cupra R is expected to have a 0-62mph time close to 5.0 seconds, with the top speed likely to be electronically limited to 155mph. Power would be transmitted to all four wheels in the same way as the Quattro equipped Audi S3.
To further distance the Cupra R from lesser models in the range, racy features such as launch control – which ensures an optimal fast getaway at the flick of a switch – and programmable driving modes are also likely to make an appearance.
The styling will also beefed up to give a more sporting appearance. Expect to see quad exhaust tailpipes, a lowered ride-height and a subtly aggressive body-kit, incorporating different front and rear bumpers.
While the Cupra R has yet to be fully signed off, Autocar reports that a slightly less powerful version is already on the way. Reviving the Cupra (standing for Cup Racing) badging of the previous generation Leon, it will develop 265bhp from a 2.0-litre turbo engine, but will be available in front-wheel-drive guise only. It will be available in three-door, five-door and estate body styles when it arrives in UK showrooms next year.
