Why buy a used Jeep Renegade?

If you're in the market for a car that's stylish, capable and compact, then a used Jeep Renegade is a great choice. It offers the same Jeep design as the brand's larger models, but comes in a smaller size that allows for better handling and control. It's equally at home in urban areas as it is on the motorway, and the spacious interior is ideal for a family.

Engines and transmissions

Jeep has offered a wide range of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains with the Renegade. These engines include either a manual or an automatic gearbox and front- or four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • E-Hybrid uses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to make 128bhp. As a self-charging hybrid, this version doesn't need to be plugged in to charge.
  • 4xe GSE is a plug-in hybrid that uses a 1.3-litre petrol and an electric motor to offer either 177bhp or 236bhp with an electric driving range of up to 26 miles.
  • Older 1.0-litre three-cylinder makes 118bhp, while an available 1.3-litre creates 147bhp.
Diesel
  • Older 1.6-litre engine makes 118bhp and is the most efficient (non-hybrid) at 48.7mpg.
  • More powerful 2.0-litre was available with an output of 167bhp.

Practicality

The Renegade is a smaller SUV, making it ideal for navigating tight spaces, but it's exceptionally roomy inside.

Interior space
  • Boxy body allows for taller passengers to fit comfortably with plenty of headroom.
  • Available eight-way electrically adjustable seating helps to create the ideal position.
  • Two adults fit well in the outer rear seats.
  • ISOFIX mounts can be found on two outer rear seats for installing child seats.
Boot space
  • 351-litre boot has a 12V socket included and an available false floor.
  • 60:40 split rear seats create 1,297 litres of space, far more than the Fiat 500X.
  • Trailhawk includes 40:20:40 split-folding seats, so two passengers can travel in the rear with long items between them.

Safety

  • 2019 Euro NCAP rating was three out of five stars.
  • Child occupant received the highest rating of 84%, while adult occupant is 82%.
  • Standard safety kit includes multiple airbags, automated emergency braking and lane departure warning.

Technology

  • 8.4-inch infotainment system is large and stands out in the cabin.
  • Connectivity is made easier with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Available 7.0-inch digital instrument display comes with higher-spec trims.

Jeep Renegade video review

Different generations of used Jeep Renegade

The name 'Renegade' was originally used by Jeep for a concept car that resembled a beach buggy, but later became a compact crossover model in 2014. While it has a similar style to other Jeep vehicles, the Renegade sports its own distinctive boxy shape. It was updated during its first generation to be more relevant and retro, but has recently entered into a new generation that is electrified.

Second Generation (2024-present)

While discontinued in other markets, the next-generation Renegade arrived back in the UK with electrified powertrains. In keeping with Jeep's commitment to turn every model into an electric vehicle by 2026, the Renegade has two different hybrid configurations.

The design of the Renegade remains familiar, with the iconic Jeep styling. Aside from the powertrain changes, the cabin has also been given a complete overhaul, providing more technology and additional comfort.

First Generation (2015 to Present)

When it first launched in 2014, the Renegade looked a lot like other Jeep models with its seven-slot grille and rounded headlights. Even the plastic bumper was designed with an off-road appearance, especially the Trailhawk trim. Off-roading equipment included a transfer case with a low-range gear.

In 2018, Jeep released an update to comply with Euro 6/D standards, giving the Renegade a petrol particulate filter to reduce emissions. Jeep also released its new traffic sign recognition technology and LED daytime running lights.

Used Jeep Renegade FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Jeep Renegade?

The petrol engines - both the 1.4T MultiAir and 1.6 E-Torq have been the most available and continue to be popular options in the used market. However, the newest hybrids are impressive and will grow in popularity in the coming years.

Which are the most popular trim levels?

Newer models come in four trims: Altitude, Summit, Overland and Trailhawk. However, the most popular Renegade is an older trim, known as the Night Eagle II. This model featured darkened exterior features for a sleek look.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for some off-roading upgrades that make the Renegade more capable when the going gets rough. Protective skid plates and the Selec-Terrain system with Rock mode offer adjustive driving modes for better all-terrain driving. There are also all-season floor mats and models with higher ground clearance to look out for.

Is the Jeep Renegade a good family car?

Yes, the Jeep Renegade has a smaller back seat than larger SUVs, but there's still room for children or even adults to fit comfortably on the outer two seats. Boot space is also accommodating, especially on the Trailhawk model, with the 40:20:40 split rear seat design.

Is there a hybrid version of the Jeep Renegade?

In the UK, the newest Renegade generation only offers hybrid configurations, both self-charging and plug-in hybrid. However, there are previous models available with either petrol or diesel powertrains.

Is the Jeep Renegade available as an automatic?

Yes, there have been some models built with an automatic transmission. Among used cars, the manual gearbox is more popular, but there should be no issue finding one with an automatic either.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Yes, the Jeep Renegade has been made with either front- or four-wheel drive. For customers planning to head off-road or wanting more traction, the advanced four-wheel drive systems are going to provide a better experience.
