Paisley

Paisley is a large town in the Scottish county of Renfrewshire, that’s part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area, the city being less than 10 miles to the east. The population figure stands at 75,000 and it is a commuter settlement to some extent.

Famous for being a religious focal point when the Abbey was constructed in the 12th century, the town also developed into a centre for textiles and weaving in the 1800s. Indeed the Paisley pattern can still be found today on a number of different garments. The decline of this sector was stark however, especially during the 1900s.

Food producing, ship building and even brewing also occurred throughout history, however these days the town is more of a business and retail centre. The Glasgow International Airport is also located in its boundaries, and is a major employer as a result.

There are plenty of landmarks around the city, including civic buildings, religious sites like the Paisley Abbey and Thomas Coats Memorial Church, as well as former industrial sites. In terms of sport, St Mirren FC is the town’s professional football club, and there’s also a hockey club and speedway team.

Location wise, Paisley is excellent for motorists, because there’s so much to see and you don’t have to travel that far either. The likes of the Argyll and Queen Elizabeth Forest Parks are very close, and the Highlands aren’t too difficult to reach either.
