Donnelly Alfa Romeo Mallusk
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the brand's premium hybrid compact crossover. It's the first Alfa Romeo to utilise electric power, coming in a hybrid option as well as a plug-in hybrid variant.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is still in its first generation, debuting in 2022. It is the most compact SUV in the Alfa Romeo line-up, and is significantly smaller than the Stelvio.
Powering the self-charging hybrid version of the Tonale is 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 168bhp paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a small electric motor. This version of the Tonale can achieve a respectable 44.8mpg, in line with its competitors.
A more powerful plug-in hybrid model is available, producing 276bhp from a 1.3-litre engine while outputting lower emissions. This version can travel for around 40 miles solely on EV power, before switching over to a regular petrol/electric hybrid setup.
To the rear of the Tonale, you'll find a 500-litre capacity boot, slightly smaller than some of its competitors in the segment. It's electrically operated and can even be opened remotely using an app.
Interior room is more than adequate in the front seats, and while fitting in the rear will be a challenge for taller adults, it's more than fine for children.
Scoring five stores in the Euro NCAP crash test, the Tonale has been fitted with several advanced safety systems and driver assistance technology, including emergency braking assistance, lane assist, speed assistance and adaptive cruise control.
Two electric displays are inside the Tonale, one for the digital instrument cluster and another for the responsive infotainment system.
Notably, the infotainment system has a level of personalisation, using widgets on the screen that allow the driver to choose what controls are at the forefront. It's even equipped with Amazon Alexa, so you can ask questions like "how much fuel is in the car?" and access other helpful information.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale marks the brand’s entry into electrification, blending signature Italian style with modern hybrid technology. Its striking design, sharp handling, and generous tech - such as digital displays and strong safety features - give it real presence in the compact SUV class. However, while the plug-in hybrid version offers solid performance and efficiency, the mild-hybrid setup can feel hesitant, and interior quality isn’t quite at the level of premium German rivals. Overall, the Tonale is a stylish and well-equipped SUV that prioritises design and driving character over outright practicality or refinement.

No, the Stelvio has a longer wheelbase, making it bigger than the Tonale. Inside, the Stelvio offers more headroom and a bigger boot capacity of 525 litres than the Tonale's 500 litres.
The official fuel consumption figure for the plug-in hybrid version of the Tonale is 217mpg, but you'll need to keep the battery topped up at all times to achieve anywhere near that. In contrast, the standard 1.5-litre mild hybrid model - that doesn't require plugging in - will achieve around 45-50mpg in normal driving.
The entry-level 1.5-litre engine can power the Tonale to 60 mph in around 8.8 seconds, reaching a top speed of 132mph. However, the top-spec 1.3-litre plug-in hybrid can achieve 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and has a top speed of 128mph.
The Tonale can be considered a very safe car, scoring 5 out of 5 stars on the Euro NCAP. It also achieved 83% for its adult occupant rating and 85% for its child occupant rating.
