Various concepts were put forward in the 1990s but it was not until much later that the Italian carmaker decided to put the newly designed Fiat 500 into production. Initially offered as a two-door, front-wheel-drive car only, a three-door hatchback was subsequently put into production. There have been a number of major model variants released by Fiat over the years, including the 500C, the Abarth 500 and the Fiat 500e. The car underwent a significant facelift in 2016. In all, five petrol-driven versions of the 500 have been made. There was one diesel-powered option and a 1-litre hybrid that was also introduced.
A Fiat 500 with a Lounge trim specification has features like:
Higher specification Fiat 500s, such as the Rock Star trim, will also include extra features such as:
Older Fiat 500s may not have all of the aforementioned features, but Fiat went to great lengths to offer a great number of added extras for a modestly proportioned city car.
There are four transmission options for the Fiat 500. A 6-speed automatic was made. Used Fiat 500s in the UK tend to be a 5-speed or 6-speed manual, or a 5-speed Dualogic semi-automatic.
The Fiat 500 is a small car. It is 3,546 mm in length and has a wheelbase that measures 2,300 mm. Its width is 1,627 mm and a European model will be no heavier than 980 kilos.
A hatchback 500 will afford you with 185 litres of storage space in the back, a surprising amount of room for such a compact car. The two rear seats fold down to provide extra capacity, of course. However, it is worth noting that only two passengers can be carried in the back as the car has only two seatbelts in its rear.
Made from 2009 onwards, the Fiat 500C is a convertible version of the car with a fixed profile. These cars come with a retractable cloth roof, which is powered. It also contains a glass rear windscreen.
One of the major awards that the Fiat 500 won was in 2008 when it was named as the European Car of the Year. The year before, the BBC's Top Gear show proclaimed it as the best city car. In 2009, the car won the prestigious World Car Design of the Year prize.
A 2-litre, 69 horsepower, automatic Fiat 500 will achieve 46 miles per gallon. A 5-speed manual version of the car made in 2013, on the other hand, will offer 28 to 31 mpg in the city and 34 to 40 mpg on the open road.
The Fiat 500 is a relatively inexpensive car to run and insure. It can sit in insurance groups as low as 7. Higher specification models are a little more expensive but most are no higher than group 12.
