BMW M5 generations

The BMW M5 (535i) was launched in 1979 during the first generation of the 5 Series when the department handling production was known as BMW Motorsport. During the first year, only 1,650 units were made. As one of the ultimate performance saloons, it has now been through six generations, with regular upgrades made to the powertrains and technology features.

Sixth Generation (2011 to 2016)

With the arrival of the sixth-generation F90 M5, BMW upgraded the mechanical platform to handle even more power. It had the front design from the 5 Series, with just a few minor improvements, such as narrower headlights with laser technology, a lower and wider grille, and bigger side scoops.

In 2018, BMW released a new xDrive all-wheel drive system for the M5, giving it upgraded handling properties. Upgrades in 2020 included new styling with the Competition Package, with black added to the grille surround and redesigned LED taillights. The exhaust sound was also improved with the help of thinner walls on the twin tailpipes. In 2021, the CS version arrived with sport-bucket seats, two carbon-fibre paddle-shifters and a digital display.

Fifth Generation (2005 to 2010)

With the arrival of a new generation, BMW decided to drop the V10 engine and switch to the smaller V8 that was even more power thanks to twin-turbocharging. Its longer wheelbase and improved suspension ensured that the drive was more comfortable, too. Compared with the 5 Series, this model had a lower front bumper and three wide air intakes. A quad exhaust system was also added to the back.

A mild update occurred in 2013 with slightly larger side sills. A honeycomb mesh grille was included to differentiate it from the standard 5 Series.

Used BMW M5 FAQ's

Which are the most popular trim levels?

Between the M5 and the M5 Competition, the base model has been the most popular. The base model has leather seating and many of the top tech features, but for a lower price.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for the Visibility Pack with laser headlights, while the Comfort Plus has massaging seats for more comfort and entertainment with rear screens. There's also the Technology Plus Pack, which has a better sound system; the M Pro Package, which adds carbon brakes; and the Ultimate pack, which combines several of the features together.

Is the BMW M5 a good family car?

Because the M5 is part of the 5 Series range, it's very practical and spacious. Four adults can fit comfortably inside, with the rear middle seat suitable for children. There's also a decent amount of boot space. The boot is designed to hold multiple suitcases and the rear seats can be folded down for additional loading capacity.

Is there a hybrid version of the BMW M5?

Because the M5 is centred on performance, BMW has not offered a hybrid powertrain with it so far.

Is the BMW M5 available as an automatic?

Yes, most BMW M5 models come standard with an automatic transmission. A manual gearbox was only offered in earlier models, making it more difficult to find in a used car.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

BMW has offered both rear and four-wheel drive M5 models throughout the years. These two drivetrains seem to be equally popular among used examples, so either is easy to find. Four-wheel drive can increase traction on slippery surfaces, while rear-wheel drive offers a sportier performance.
