The BMW X4 was launched in 2014 and is based largely on the X3 variant. However, it has a sloping roofline. The differences between the X3 and X4 come down to the styling, with the X4 having a coupé-like appearance instead of resembling an SUV. Currently in its second generation, BMW continues to update the equipment, powertrains and style to make the lineup more exciting year after year.

Used BMW X4 information
Engines and transmissions
Over the years, the BMW X4 has been available with petrol and diesel engines paired to an automatic or a manual gearbox and standard all-wheel drive.
Petrol- Powerful M40i uses mild hybrid technology and a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine to make 349bhp for a 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds and an efficiency rating of 31.4mpg.
- The more extreme X4 M variant increases the power to 502bhp, making it the fastest available, with a 0-60mph time of 4.0 seconds but a lower fuel efficiency rating of 25mpg.
- xDrive20d produces a total of 187bhp for a 7.7-second 0-60mph time and a rating of up to 47.9mpg - this is the standard and most common engine choice.
- xDrive30d boosts the power to 281bhp, reducing the 0-60mph time to 5.5 seconds, but only dropping the efficiency to 42.8mpg.
- M40d is the most powerful diesel with 335bhp, creating a 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds and returning around 40mpg.
- Older xDrive35d used a 3.0-litre engine to make 308bhp with a 47mpg efficiency rating.
Practicality
The sloping roofline makes the X4 slightly less practical than the X3, but there's still plenty of space for a family of four.
Interior space- Four adults fit comfortably, with a slight reduction in headroom for rear passengers.
- Available Extended Storage Pack includes a reclining back seat, which helps to make more room for taller passengers.
- ISOFIX mounting points for child seats are easy to access in the rear.
- 525-litre boot is slightly smaller than the X3, but still allows for four large suitcases.
- Hydraulic strut lifts the boot floor for access to a handy storage area.
- Back seats can be dropped to access up to 1,430 litres of space.
Safety
- 2017 Euro NCAP crash test rating was a perfect five stars.
- 93% rating given for adult occupant and 84% for child occupant.
- Newer models include a reversing camera and parking sensors (both front and rear).
Technology
- 12.3-inch touchscreen allows use of the high-tech BMW operating system.
- Standard kit includes Bluetooth, satnav, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- 12.3-inch digital driver's display helps drivers keep their eyes on the road.

Second Generation (2018 to 2021)
Considering that the first-generation X4 was only around for four years, there weren't many changes that needed to take place with the second generation. The appearance was very similar to its predecessor with its iconic kidney grille and low-hung bumper. However, some minor updates made the new X4 more modern and bolder looking, such as the expanded front grille that was enhanced with a 3D-look. In the back, the X4 was completely revamped, especially with the new taillight design.
A 2021 facelift occurred at the same time as the X3, as the two shared the same platform. A new bumper design was released with a single-frame kidney grille and mesh attached. Matrix LED headlights became standard equipment and LED taillights with 3D and horizontal lines helped to accentuate the width of the X4.

First Generation (2014 to 2018)
Because BMW had a lot of success with the X6, the company decided to make a similarly designed car but in a smaller package. In 2014, the sporty X4 was released with many styling features that resembled both the X3 and the X6. It was adorned with a large kidney grille and big air intakes for brake cooling and an aggressive look. The sloping roofline gave it the high-riding coupé look they were going for, and it certainly looked stylish on the road.
In the cabin, BMW put bolstered seats in the front and a wide, tall centre console between them for added storage. High-tech features were added to the interior, giving the X4 the edge over its competition.
