The CUPRA Leon is a sleek five-door hot hatch that delivers style and performance in equal measure. Launched in 2020 and still in its first generation, the CUPRA Leon is a relatively recent addition to the Spanish brand's line-up. Its older sibling, the SEAT Leon CUPRA, has been in production since 2001 and been through three generations since.
The CUPRA Leon is a rebranded hot hatch version of the previous model, sporting sharper styling, more aerodynamic bodywork, and upgraded engine options. But don't be fooled by its sleek appearance: from its spacious cabin to useful new tech, this car is as practical as it is cool.
Widely praised for its slick transmission and powerful drivetrain, the CUPRA Leon has been described as a quicker, more focused alternative to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Of course, this depends on which powertrain you opt for, and there are several choices available in the petrol and hybrid categories. All of the variants are front-wheel drive.
The petrol line-up starts with a turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder 2.0-litre 245bhp model. For extra torque, there's the 300bhp variant. And if you're really looking to push things to the next level, the Sportstourer family estate version offers a 310bhp 2.0-litre TSI turbo.
All of these powertrains come with a slick dual-clutch automatic transmission powered by shift-by-wire technology, which uses electronic signals for instantaneous gear shifts.
The e-HYBRID CUPRA Leon combines a 150bhp 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with a 115bhp electric motor and 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack to deliver an overall 245bhp of peak power and 400Nm of torque. Fully charged, it's good for 25 miles of electric-only range before switching over to petrol/electric hybrid power.
Despite a seemingly compact, streamlined exterior, the CUPRA Leon offers a wealth of space inside with more generous front and back seating areas than most cars in its category. The petrol-only variants of the CUPRA Leon are the most practical, offering 380 litres of boot space.
The e-HYBRID hatch version loses some of this room to the battery and as a result, has just 270 litres of boot space, whereas the Sportstourer estate offers an impressive 587 litres of room.
CUPRA cars are well known for safety, and the Leon is no different with a rating of five out of five stars in its Euro NCP safety test. Rear and front parking sensors, a rear-view camera, Traffic Sign recognition, and Park Assist are just some of the technologies that make the Leon a safe and enjoyable car to drive.
The CUPRA Leon is fitted with all of the tech you need to keep warm in the winter months, including a heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

As standard, no, the CUPRA Leon is not electric. It has both petrol-only and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.
With a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds, base model 148bhp versions are not overly quick but are fast enough for most people. If you're looking for performance, the 296bhp 4WD VZ2 model is the one you want, while the 242bhp plug-in hybrid variants are fairly swift, too.
