Honda Accord straddled the gap between mainstream family cars such as the VW Passat and luxurious German machines such as the BMW 3 series. Although its build and performance excellence was beyond reproach, it struggled initially in the UK market due to the declining demand for estate cars. Honda brought the Accord into the UK market in 2003, and in time it became one of the leading in-class premium family saloons, outdoing its main competition, the Ford Mondeo, with its premium appeal. The car's superb quality, stylish body style and upscale interior kept it on top of most car shoppers' list. The competitors eventually measured up and left it behind. Nonetheless, it remains a good drive with precise steering, luxurious interior and impressive road performance. It is also pretty quick, accelerating from 0-62 mph in 9.4 seconds with a sluggish diesel engine and 8.1 seconds with the more potent 2.4-litre i-VTEC petrol unit.

While the early versions of the Accord had only petrol engines, a late entrant, the 2.2-litre diesel engine with 6-speed manual transmission, became the more popular in the UK. Its fame was due to its high economy and low emissions. Petrol-powered versions come with either a 2.0-litre unit with a 5-speed manual gearbox as a standard or a 2.4-litre petrol model with 6-speed manual transmission. Until its scrapping, no Accord diesel engine came with an automatic gearbox.

The interior of the Accord is plusher than its competition. The car is moderately spacious, with 459 litres of boots space complemented by a few storage pockets in the cabin and a decently sized glove compartment. The saloon can carry 5 people but feels a little more cramped than the Ford Mondeo. Those who seek more space might consider the Honda Accord Tourer estate with maximum boot storage of 1183 litres.
Since there are no new ones for the UK market, you have to settle for the more affordable options in the used market. Used Honda Accords in near-new condition deliver a fuel economy between 25-30 mpg with petrol or diesel engines. Unfortunately, Honda Accord, unlike its rivals, never had efficiency optimising technology such as the BlueMotion and ECOnetic available on the VW Passat and Ford Mondeo, respectively.
Honda Accord is a real power-performer that offers the same Honda-specific comfort and reliability. In fact, this model is considered one of the most reliable vehicles on the market. This is particularly true of the 9th and 10th generations of the model - cars from 2015, 2017 and 2019 have had the lowest number of problems and complaints.
The chassis is composed, and the suspension responds well to potholes in rough roads, while the steering is excellently responsive at bends. The performance is undoubtedly better than that of VWs and the Mondeo, but it is still not as fun to drive as the premium German machines it tried to emulate, like the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4.
It is slightly more spacious than the saloon and a better option for those in need of a more spacious Accord. Even though easily fits as an estate, Honda never identified it as such, leaving some people to call it a hatchback version of the Accord. Despite not having a category to identify with, it remains a more practical family car than the saloon.
The first Accord version received 4-stars on , but the 2008 facelifted versions earned all the 5-stars. After the facelift, all Honda Accord cars came with lots of safety equipment as a standard, including 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, ESP and anti-whiplash front headrests. Optional driver assist packages are also available such as adaptative cruise control and lane-departure monitoring system.
