Kia first introduced the seven-seater Sorento to the UK in 2002, making it the company's largest model on sale here. From the beginning, it was known as a practical SUV with a reliable build, yet Kia has continued to refine the powertrains, cabin and style through its four generations.

Different generations of used Kia Sorento
Fourth Generation (2020 to Present)
With the fourth generation, Kia looked to update the style and features to match the price being charged. As a large 4x4 SUV, it was well-equipped for big families, but could always use more refinement. One powertrain option was initially offered, with the choice of a manual or automatic transmission and available four-wheel drive. Since then, more powertrains have been added.
Interior upgrades included available 10-way power seat adjustments, creating a better positioning. Road visibility was improved, thanks to the large windscreen.

Third Generation (2015 to 2020)
For the third-generation Sorento, Kia increased the amount of high-strength steel used in the build, making it stronger and safer overall. It became a top contender against the Volvo XC90 and the Land Rover Discovery.
A 2017 refresh didn't change the style dramatically. Instead, Kia worked on fine-tuning what was already working. Top-of-the-range models were fitted with premium Nappa leather and high-end materials for a luxury feel.

Second Generation (2010 to 2014)
After the success of the original Kia Sorento, the designers worked to make the SUV more desirable. The goal was to create an upscale vehicle without the luxury price. A new grille showed off the tiger-nose design, while the headlights were built in a sharp and angular style.
The dashboard also received some updates, with the speedometer mounted to the centre. The LCD screen revealed important data from the computer, and there was an optional panoramic glass roof.

Used Kia Sorento FAQ's
Is the Sorento available as an all-wheel drive?
Newer models are only available as all-wheel drive, but earlier generations included the option of two-wheel drive, which can be found on the used market.
Is the Sorento the largest model in the Kia lineup?
In the UK, the Sorento is Kia's largest non-electric SUV. It sits slightly larger than the Sportage, but is smaller than the EV9.
Which is the most popular engine in the Kia Sorento?
For towing purposes, the diesel powertrain offers the best capability, making it the best choice for this use case. On the other hand, the PHEV allows for electric-only travel, which is helpful if you have access to a charger and can travel without putting fuel in the tank.
Which are the most popular trim levels?
Kia offers newer models in the Vision and Sorento Edition trims. Both can be equipped with any of the three powertrains and a variety of features.
Is the Kia Sorento a good family car?
Yes, with space to hold up to seven people, the Sorento is one of the few SUVs that are suitable for a large family. The cabin is equipped with high-tech equipment and comfort features to ensure that everyone enjoys the drive.
Is there a hybrid version of the Kia Sorento?
Yes, both petrol engines are paired with hybrid technology for more efficiency. There's a mild-hybrid and PHEV variant, depending on your needs. There are also other powertrains without hybrid technology, such as the diesel motor, which creates superior towing ability.
Is the Kia Sorento available as an automatic?
Both petrol hybrid engines pair with a 6-speed automatic. The diesel motor combines with an 8-speed DCT automatic instead. Manual transmissions are also available in older used models, but aren't part of the newest lineup.
