As far as British sports car manufacturers go, not many can boast the facilities or expertise available at McLaren Automotive. A hugely successful brand in its own right, the company enjoys a close relationship with the McLaren Formula 1 team and has used this link to transfer racing technology into mind blowing road cars. The word awesome would be a massive understatement!
Formed in 1989, McLaren had previously had a hand in the development of the M81 Mustang with Ford, but the first car solely produced by the company was the F1. This beast of an auto revolutionised the world of motoring and was the fastest production car available for years. With a 0-60mph time of just 3 seconds and a top speed of around 240mph, it was unbeatable in terms of performance but offered futuristic designs too, spawning a new breed of hyper cars.
In true McLaren style, the F1 was given a run on the track and triumphed in GT series racing, as well as Le Mans in 1995. It was light years ahead of the competition and still puts many racing cars to shame even today.
Fast forward a few years to the turn of the Millennium and McLaren's long standing relationship with Mercedes bore the fruit that was the SLR. Now regarded as hyper car royalty, it's easy to see why. Jaw droppingly beautiful from every angle, the monster 5.5 litre V8 engine has been compared to a Norse god gargling a hammer. The 772 Edition was released in 2006 which took the SLR to heights previously thought impossible.
Modern day McLarens such as the MP4-12C build on past success but push the boundaries even further. A scientific approach to production combined with super stylish designs have long been key attributes to the marque, and it's no more evident than with the latest and greatest offerings.
To own a McLaren is to join one of the most exclusive clubs in motoring. Not many exist and those that do are hugely expensive. Despite this, it's possible to get one for a discounted price if you buy second hand and the reductions available at Motors.co.uk could give you the chance you've been waiting for. Don't expect one to hang around though as sales will be fast and furious.
McLaren cars are epic in every possible stretch of the imagination. Massive performance, incredible designs and a driving experience that's in a league of its own mean you'll be one of the luckiest people alive to own one!
