If you're in the market for a car that's stylish, compact and upmarket, then a used MINI Hatch is a great choice. With numerous powertrain options, the Hatch's engine range is exciting and it offers a fun city drive. Not only is the build quality above expectations, but the cabin is also packed full of the latest technology and equipment.
While the MINI Hatch has been available with petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains paired with a manual or an automatic gearbox, it has only been offered with front-wheel drive.
ElectricThe MINI Hatch is great for driving in congested city spaces because of its smaller footprint, and the interior room is as practical as possible for its size.
Interior spaceBuilding on the original MINI design from the 1960s, the Hatch was first introduced in 1997. Its retro styling hadn't changed much from the original design and it had just enough room to hold four people. Now, the famous model (also known as the MINI Cooper) is in its fourth generation, bringing modern styling and upgraded technology to the classic shape.
The goal of the fourth generation was to create more efficiency and excitement with upgraded powertrains, but the styling was also refreshed. LED lights were added to the front of the car and the interior received a minimalistic design without giving up any of the premium features it was known for.
The MINI Cooper SE was electrified and was also given some updates. While this model only came in the three-door design, it did gain flush door handles that gave it a flowing style, and the tilted tailgate received a roof spoiler.
With the help of BMW, the Hatch had grown slightly, creating more interior space. It was also the first time the five-door Hatch hit the roads, making it more family-friendly, though the company didn't discontinue the sporty three-door model.
In 2018, a mild update was released with an air scoop on sportier versions for improved cooling. There were also some new tech features, including a revised powertrain list.

With nearly the same design as the first generation, the second-generation Hatch didn't look very different when it was released in 2006, except for the upgraded headlight design. Its black pillars also helped to give it the impression that the roof was floating. Yet there was almost nothing different inside the cabin.
Powertrain options were built in partnership between Peugeot and BMW, replacing what was previously supplied by Chrysler. There were also new transmission options, allowing for some flexibility.

The petrol engines remain the most popular among used Hatch models. The popularity of petrol motors may be because they are offered most frequently, especially since diesel motors were discontinued in 2018.
The newest lineup includes the Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works, while the Classic, Sport and Exclusive were also available in older lineups. The Cooper has been the most popular with its lower starting price and well-equipped cabin with Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning and a leather steering wheel as standard.
If you need to transport more luggage for a holiday you may be interested in the roof rails. Additional safety equipment is an optional extra, including park assist with front parking sensors and a rear-view camera.
The MINI Hatch isn't generally described as a family car, but it could be, especially the five-door model with the rear doors.
A PHEV variant of the MINI Hatch is available for a limited time which uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine. This model can be difficult to find among used cars, but MINI has since released an all-electric model that has become more popular.
There's an automatic transmission option among used cars and it's relatively popular. However, there are far more Hatch models equipped with a manual gearbox.
